Wayne Pate arrived in New York as a high school dropout from Dallas with no plans. Adapted from paintings in his sketchbooks, the designs hearken to Matisse’s Paris (think the Fauvists, Sonia Delaunay, André Derain), but with Pate’s own playful and graphic spin.

Wallpaper, Fabric, and Pillows
Studio Four NYC’s latest Wayne Pate designs include Casablanca Wallpaper; $67.50 per yard (five-yard minimum).
Petite Seaweed Linen, $140 a yard, is hand-screen-printed on Belgian linen (and also comes in green and orange).
Lotus-patterned Trois Blooms, $67.50 per roll, is shown in blush.
Exotic Fruit Wallpaper, a botanical stripe, is $67.50 per yard; 8-by-10 samples are $10.
Memories of his wife at their bungalow on Shelter Island inspired Rebecca’s Garden Linen, $157.50 per yard.
Petite Zoebel, which Pate describes as “two joined flowers,” was named for his and Taylor’s twins, Zoey and Isabel.
A commission to create a wall of plates for an art collector led Pate to start creating hand-painted ceramics. Pate formerly focused on creating silkscreened prints, but now makes one-of-a-kind pieces.

The latest offering: a limited-edition line of urns that Pate created in collaboration with his neighbor, plaster artist Stephen Antonson (see his sculptural lighting in The Master of Plaster).
