On the Water: A Family Houseboat on the Thames

As anyone who’s ever looked to purchase a home in a bustling metropolis can tell you, the real estate market can be put-up-your-dukes competitive. May we suggest expanding your options and taking a page from Claire and Alistair Langhorn, who bought a 1950s Dutch barge on the Thames and converted the 2,150 square-foot floating space into chic living quarters for their family of four? Take a look.

Claire and Alistair, who are directors of LAB Architects, named the boat Bosco. It’s moored in Battersea, a district in South London.

Claire and Alistair designed a steel and glass conservatory (“a winter garden”) that mimics the dimensions of a standard shipping container.

The houseboat is listed for £1.8 million via The Modern House.

Inside the conservatory, the couple’s houseplants thrive.

The boat comes with a 120-year mooring on Oyster Pier in Battersea.

Appropriately, the kitchen is galley style.

Oak parquet flooring and a sophisticated, calming gray elevate the primary bedroom.

A playful recreation room.

A cozy kid’s bedroom.
