Kitchen Tour: Natural Materials at a Portuguese Retreat

Photography via Cucumbi

Each year on the brink of fall, we’re reminded of perhaps the most autumnal project we’ve featured yet: Cucumbi, lodgings on an organic farm in Alentejo, Portugal. Today we’re taking a closer look at one of the guest house kitchens, done in a neutral, natural palette—and with no disposable plastics in sight.

In keeping with the hotel’s eco ethos, the kitchen is spare and rustic, designed by Lisbon-based Sofia Albuquerque.

The natural material palette includes “wood, wicker, cork, cotton, and linen,” concrete counters, and stucco niches.

It's stocked with earth-toned ceramics.

Another kitchen corner with a built-in countertop, basic wood shelves, and a linen sink skirt.

The farm “shop,” with fresh-picked offerings (plus locally made baskets, ceramics, soaps, and more).
