Inside The Great Commune Shop Experiment in LA

Recently, Commune, the influential LA design collective, cleared room in their studio to open a temporary emporium dubbed The Great Commune Shop Experiment. On view is the collective’s love of refined craft: household designs made by the family of artists and artisans Commune has been collaborating with for years. The plan is to keep the shop open for four months and then see what happens, so catch it while you can.

"We dropped a modular structure in the middle of an unfinished space in the 1924 Spanish Colonial building that houses our studio in LA’s MacArthur Park,” explains Roman Alonso, who runs Commune with his partner, Steven Johanknecht.

The shop sells a high/low array of things, like Commune Light Sockets, $45, classic porcelain fixtures that Commune “colorizes”.

LA textile artist Adam Pogue made this collection of scrap fabric stools and hand-dyed linen quilts for the shop opening.

Studio ceramics are a Commune favorite, like H for Hannah Nesting Bowls, Kevin Willis for Commune Lanterns, and Dog Bowls.

The Studio Ford for Commune Dog Bed, handmade in India, has Commune’s cactus flower pattern paired with its signature plaid.
