Design Like a Poem: A Serene Barn in East Sussex Redone by Cassandra Ellis

Lately we've been admiring New Zealand-born, London-based designer Cassandra Ellis's own revitalized 17th-century flint barn in East Sussex Downs. The interiors are soothing and quiet, still with moments of brightness and cheerfulness. Take a look:

The bright entrance hall, with a long vintage wine-tasting table. “It moves outside for sunny days and holds beautiful stones and objects from the nearby beach,” Cassandra says.

“I replaced all the lighting and removed all the excess tchotchkes/stuff,” says Cassandra. “The rest came about from placing our favorite possessions."

The interiors are painted in hues from the designer’s own collection (each “quiet, calm, and enveloping").

A must for Cassandra: “Noguchi lights—always, for me; everywhere.”

“Most of the house is in Warm White, as this color brings the sun into somewhere like the barn," says Cassandra.

A bedroom feels at once serene and optimistic, with a hand-dyed antique linen spread in sunny yellow.

The bath features brass details and a pale pink soaking tub.
