Copenhagen Contemporary: Dinesen Offcuts transformed into Furniture for a Museum Café

Julius Værnes Iversen of design studio Tableau was working with the Copenhagen Contemporary on floral installations when he offered his team’s services for its new café. Knowing the art center was on a budget and having heard Dinesen was looking to put its offcuts to good use, the scrap furniture project was born. Tableau teamed up with Australian designer Ari Prasetya and commissioned 25 creatives to create 50 chairs, tables, and benches for the café.

Copenhagen Contemporary, founded in 2016, is set in the Refshaleøen neighborhood in a former industrial building, once a welding hall, in the city’s outer harbor.

The green was inspired by a trip to Jels, Denmark, where Dinesen has its production—it’s the color that they transport the wood in all around the world,” explains Tableau.

Copenhagen Contemporary is one of Denmark’s largest exhibition venues.

The one-armed Genno chair, center, is another Ari Prasetya piece.

Tableau’s light green Stacked Table is paired with Ari Prasetya’s black Armmi armchair, and Hysteria’s Iratio stool.
