Bright and Bold: Inside a 17th-Century House on Mallorca

One of the more original projects we’ve seen in a while: Ca’n Rei on Mallorca, a 17th-century house on a cliff over the sea, redone by Isla Architects:

A small sign next to the door announces the house’s name.

Wooden front doors open into the high-ceilinged main room.

To the left of the dining table, the architects enlarged an existing niche to fit a fridge, freezer, a washing machine, electric oven, and food storage.

Palencia and Colón installed a tinted-concrete sink by local company Huguet, a reference to Mallorcan stone sinks.

A low-profile cooktop and plenty of storage beneath the kitchen’s front window.

Two stairways lead to the other rooms.

The library has the most lived-in look, with books on low white shelves.

The two bright bedrooms.

The architects added small windows in the back of the house for cross-ventilation.

A front window overlooks the sea.
