Tom Dixon’s Wingback Armchair

The luxurious Wingback chair is part of a collection that is designed by British designer Tom Dixon and handmade in the George Smith factory in Newcastle. The chair is inspired by the iconic 18th Century Wingback and the design adds a traditional look to a living space with its curved sides and distinctive tapered back. Its strong frame is created from solid kiln dried sustainable beech with its steel coil springs hand tied into wide bands of very strong interwoven jute webbing. Natural cotton is tightly packed around the springs for perfect weight absorption, while layers of natural cotton and boar bristle are added to provide extra comfort. Cotton muslin is hand sewn to give a seamless base for upholstery and then the mohair velvet is hand cut to the correct pattern and sewn into place on the frame. It has solid turned legs available in black lacquer or natural finish. The Tom Dixon by George Smith collection celebrates the traditions of British upholstered furniture made using established techniques practiced for over 250 years. Skilled craftsmen, including generations of the same family, employ the use of traditional skills such as joinery, hand sewing and upholstery.
