Description from The Collection
Cord lamp Flax designed by Christien Meinderstma.
With a porcelain fixture at one end for the light bulb and a socket at the other end, this light which is 10 metres long can be placed on the floor, suspended from the ceiling or wound around a hook on a wall.
For the Flax project, Christien Meindertsma examined the ancient art of cord making – a method popular in the Netherlands during the 16 century. The flax was grown locally (the Netherlands was one of the largest producers in Europe). The designer has taken long strands, woven them and combed them following tradtional methods and then transformed the ropes into lights.
The Flax project was developped for the brand Thomas Eyck in collaboration with the Zuiderzeemuseum in Enkhuisen.
