Description from Design Within Reach
Inspired by George Nelson’s experiments with metal frame lamp structures, the Castiglioni brothers designed their Taraxacum S2 (1960). To create the luminous structure, the brothers created a shape out of powder-coated steel that was sprayed with a “cocoon” of plastic polymers and protected with a clear finish. The coating acts as a diffuser, resulting in a lamp that delivers a warm, soft glow. Achille Castiglioni often referred to what he called the “principal design component,” which could mean a new technology or even a new behavior. The next step was to build upon the component, and this was an area where the Castiglioni brothers truly excelled. Through rigorous examination of materials and production techniques, they created work like the Taraxacum S2. The word Taraxacum is the Latin name for the common dandelion. Twenty-eight years later, Achille used the name again with the introduction of his Taraxacum ’88. Bulb included: One halogen 100W/120V/T10. Made in Italy by Flos.
