Description from The New Craftsmen
Scorched “Shake” sideboard by Sebastian Cox and Benchmark Furniture. A contemporary sideboard cabinet constructed with blackened shakes in chestnut and an ash timber frame. Blackened exclusively for The New Craftsmen, each shake has been delicately hand-scorched to blacken it without setting it alight. The shakes are then assembled on the door frames to create a fantastic charred texture. Shakes are a type of shingle commonly used in Japan as architectural cladding. Made from coppiced chestnut, each has been cleft (the ancient art of splitting wood along its grain) skillfully split as thinly as possible.
