Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, 2014
Sharp angles and prismatic shapes serve as canvases for the fluid intermingling of iridescent colors in these precise yet ethereal vessels. Ruutu is a collection of diamond-shaped, multi-colored vases whose colors interact with each other when they’re positioned together. Designers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec sought to show the breadth of Iittala’s sophisticated color range while also enabling the user freedom of expression through final composition of these modular vases.
Named for the Finnish word for diamond or square, the form is deceptively simple as its strict geometry pushes the limits of its material. While lava-like liquid glass flows easily into round, organic shapes, it resists the precision of the square. The delicate colors also pose a challenge, requiring expert knowledge of glass-mass chemistry and careful attention to the exact temperature of the material and timing of production. Each vase is an artisan masterpiece that takes seven craftsmen 24 hours to produce in the storied Iittala glass factory. Hand wash.
