Description from Modernica
Setting the gold standard for comfort, the Papa Bear chair and ottoman is one of the most popular and enduring of Hans J. Wegner’s designs. Like many of Wegner chairs, such as the ‘Peacock chair’ or the ‘Bull chair’, the Papa Bear Chair invokes the animal kingdom, with its characteristically playful and organic aspects. Apparently, the chair’s idiosyncratic name originates from a critic’s comment referring to the armrests as ‘great paws embracing you from behind’.
Designed in 1951 by Wegner, the Papa Bear chair and ottoman were originally manufactured by AP Stolen of Denmark and were produced until 1969. For thirty-four years the chair was out-of-production in Europe. In 2003, PP Mí¸bler of Denmark launched the chair and ottoman into its product collection.
An internationally recognizable design, the Papa Bear has been produced by Modernica since 1994. For over sixteen years, Modernica’s master builders have been painstakingly handcrafting each chair and ottoman. Modernica follows strict adherences to the original design with regards to dimensions, frame construction, fabric pleating and materials. Making this significant design, an affordable luxury, built without any compromise to the original specifications and construction.
The Papa Bear Chair and ottoman are offered in over 50 fabric and leather choices – more than any other online source. The Papa Bear’s arm pads and legs are constructed of solid North American walnut.
