Description from A+R
In the Copenhague Table CPH30, the tabletop seems almost to float on air, the result of recessing the hallmark A-frame base and angling the table legs for a subtle aerodynamic effect. It’s a dramatic addition to the award-winning Copenhague Collection, originally created for the redesigned College of the Humanities at Copenhagen University. Danish house Hay invited Paris brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec to come up with something that could stand apart from the usual institutional fare. The initial design brief was simple: “A strong, sensual, stackable wooden chair.” From there, a collection was born configured around a minimalist A-frame concept.
Born in Brittany, the brothers Bouroullec are among the brightest lights in European furniture design, and heralded as the most important French stars in the field since Philippe Starck’s rise in the 1980s. Showcased at venues as diverse as Los Angeles’ own Museum of Contemporary Art, the Villa Noailles in Hyeres and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, their work also resides in select permanent collections, including Paris’s Centre Pompidou and Musée des Arts Décoratifs, New York’s Museum of Modern Art and the Art Institute of Chicago. Melding form and function, their hallmark is a precise, controlled, yet lyrical aesthetic. Fellow designer Jasper Morrison describes the brothers’ work as “thoughtful and disciplined, with a real spirit and poetry.”
