Description from Design Within Reach
DWR Design Studio created the Harvest Drop Leaf Table (2008) using the design principles that embody the Shaker approach to furniture. This table has a sturdy and symmetrical form that’s defined by its functionality. Simple and austere, two drop leaves increase or decrease the footprint depending on immediate needs. Wooden pegs fold out to support the leaves when they’re raised and act as stoppers when the leaves are folded down. The modern maxim that form follows function was phrased by the Shakers as, “beauty rests on utility,” which is an expression found in Shaker literature. This reference to beauty does not imply ornament or decoration, both of which the Shakers avoided for fear of encouraging the sin of pride. Rather, this beauty is inherent to a useful object, and “that which has in itself the highest use possesses the greatest beauty.” Made in U.S.A.
