Description from Shaker Workshops
We make our Shaker oval boxes on reproductions of the original forms and templates used at the Mt. Lebanon, New York Shaker community during the mid-19th century. Like the Shakers, we produce our oval boxes in eleven different sizes and we use the original Shaker numbering system (No. 11 being the smallest box and No. 1 being the largest box). And, like the Shakers, our oval boxes feature uniformly slender sides, symmetrical joints, and neat, tight-fitting lids.
We handcraft them of select Pennsylvania cherry, secured by copper tacks. Tops and bottoms are fastened with wooden pegs. We hand rub them with several coats of oil finish and buff them until they “glow”. The insides are unfinished. The Shakers used oval boxes for sewing and quilting notions and for kitchen dry goods. Today, their uses are unlimited. Made in USA.
Prices start at $35.00
