Description from Manufactum
Ready at Hand on the Desktop Bookcase.
Stacks of books have a tendency to topple, and inchoate piles of them will tectonically shift. Instead of holding books by support from the sides, the accepted practice in libraries is to store and transport them on a bookshelf tipped back, as our book trolley also demonstrates. A seldom item outside the USA is the so-called desktop bookshelf, a ubiquitous small piece of furniture whose method of construction utilises the tilted shelf principle. It’s used to store books that are frequently used, reference works, notebooks and address books. This shelf provides the reader with the relevant service at the preferred location, for instance on the desk or a night table. With a usable width of 38 cm, there is space for current as well as back literature. But the shelf is space-saving enough so that it won’t commandeer the entire desk and because of its compact format it can be quickly shunted to the side.
This powder-coated sheet steel shelf is a variant of the desktop bookshelf made of oak we’ve been offering for a while. It’s quite the equal of the oak model in terms of looks and quality in spite of its more economical price. The small piece of furniture is manufactured in Schwerte at the south-east border of the Ruhr Area. The steel sheet is folded and spot welded, so it comes with no undesirable sharp edges. It stays put on the desk since the sheet bottom, which is also powder coated and slightly rough, forms a relatively wide standing area.
