Description from A Vida Portuguesa
Pope blanket, woven in an entirely handloom using churra wool with white background and brown stripes.
Near the Guard, a region whose textile production was driven by the Marquis of Pombal, the village of Maçainhas has lived the manufacture of these once very popular blankets. Founded in 1966, José Freire Blankets Factory is now the last in the country to produce them. Seasonally in summer, wool churra, thick and long local sheep is spun and woven in an old entirely handloom. The end result is the true pope blanket, consistent and very warm, with its characteristic long hair.
