Granicium® is a proprietary development of the pottery. The starting material is real granite, which is crushed into rock flour in a mineral mill. Together with water and effective microorganisms, this flour is transformed into a malleable mass that is very similar in structure to ceramic clay in a process known as mastication that lasts several days. When wet, however, this mass is sensitive and can only be further processed with great care and skill. The drying process alone takes two weeks, which must be waited for before a shaped bird bath can be fired at very high temperatures in a gas kiln. An effort that pays off, because Granicium® is extremely hard and even frost-resistant.
