Description from Design Within Reach
When Charles and Ray Eames designed the Eames Aluminum Group (1958), they created a revolution in seating that has lost none of its edge. This collection was originally developed as a special project for Eero Saarinen and Alexander Girard, who were designing the private residence of Columbus, Indiana-based industrialist J. Irwin Miller. Saarinen wanted high-quality seating for outdoor use and asked Charles and Ray Eames to develop it. Moving away from the Eameses’ shell forms of the 1940s, the designers combined a newly affordable aluminum frame with a sling seat that subtly conforms to the body’s shape. It was initially promoted as the “leisure group” or “indoor-outdoor group”, but the collection of iconic seating moved inside exclusively. In early 2012, Herman Miller returned the Aluminum Group to its original outdoor intent, with new materials suitable for outdoor use. This original is an authentic product by Herman Miller®, Inc. Eames is a licensed trademark of Herman Miller. Made in U.S.A.
