Gift Guide 2024: Good Things That Come in (Very) Small Packages

December 6, 2024

Forget the gifts under the tree. Come holiday time, I much prefer to give (and receive) the tiniest surprises and delights, proof that my childhood delight in miniatures has not subsided one inch.

Ahead, 13 finds to fill stockings, gift for Hanukkah, or tuck into an advent calendar—all under $25 and small enough to fit in the palm of the hand.

(P.S. Yes, I also love wrapping pint-sized gifts—though you could also tie on a ribbon and go.)

Above: A new-to-us curiosity: The tiniest Candle Mirrors reflect, and multiply, each little flame. They’re €20 for a box from Curiosa Cabinet. (Mirrored Candle Pins are also available from Anthropologie, though they’re currently waitlist only.)

Above: A bigger gift masquerading as a tiny one: The Brass Kenzan Flower Frog allows the recipient to make artful, wild arrangements from found flora all year long. It’s $23 from Quarters.

Above L: Did anyone else receive a Terry’s Chocolate Orange in their stocking as a kid? The Meurisse Orange Dark Chocolate is the decidedly grownup version; $9.50 from Little King. Above R: A Tiny Brass Bell, $3 from Earthen.

Above: When I lived in New York, I used to make a December pilgrimage to C.O. Bigelow, the oldest operating apothecary in the U.S. (dating to 1838) for all manner of old-fashioned gifts. Two favorites: Their All-Purpose Rose Salve (which “may be used on lips, face, cuticles, elbows, knees,” etc.); $9 for a tin. And a Natural Bristle Toothbrush in Tortoise, practical yet still a treat; $9.

Above: Julie has been eyeing the treats from Commune Design x Valerie Confections, and I quite like the looks of their Good Mix Hot Chocolate Bar, delicious inside and out. (Click through to see what I mean.) It’s $12.50 (or $18 from Hawkins New York).

Above: Or from Casey Rubber Stamps, an emporium of every stamp imaginable (truly): itty-bitty percolators, forks and knives, woven baskets, and cake servers run $6-$12 each via the Kitchen/Baskets/Pipe collection.

Above: From Hawkins New York, a Simple Bar Tool ($17.55) for the at-home mixologist. A bottle of spirits might take up the whole stocking, but it’s still encouraged.

Above: “Make a wish. Light the special paper on a plate.” Wish Paper, just because, is $8 from Heirloom Art Co.

Above: “The ultimate in sartorial first aid!” “The perfect gift for anyone who’s ever come undone!” Or a welcome gift for anyone who likes to bring their sewing projects on the road. The Rapid Repair Kit by Merchant & Mills for Purl Soho is $25.

Above: With all our phone-holding and typing, who couldn’t use a little hand TLC? Keep the oiled beechwood Massage Roller handy (sorry) on the desk or nightstand; $8 from Copper Beech.

Above: From Brown Parcel Press on Etsy: “Inside/Outside is a collection of prints about the bits of life that hold a plain and simple kind of beauty—both inside our home and outside our front door.” The Outside No. 3: Gingko Leaves Print is $12 and would be lovely framed. For an “Inside” version, I quite like Inside No. 2: Kettle’s Whistle.
