The latest outpost of the Ace Hotel is ushering in a Pittsburgh renaissance. Located in a 100-year-old former YMCA building in East Liberty, the hotel was designed by Chad Chalmers of Moss Architects and the Ace Hotel design team Atelier Ace.
In classic Ace fashion, the rooms are modest, cool, and full of ideas to steal. Here we decode some of the basics and show off Atelier Ace’s sourcing (Pittsburgh local and otherwise).
Above: A mild dose of “new Americana” in the hotel’s suite bedroom. Visit the Ace Hotel Pittsburgh for more.
Above: A freestanding bathtub is tucked in a corner of the room with views of the city through industrial windows.
Above: Reminiscent of London’s High Road House, a row of Shaker-like pegboards line the top half of the bedroom walls.
Furniture
Above: A modern version of the antique black rocking chair in the Ace suite is Artek’s Mademoiselle Rocking Chair by Ilmari Tapiovaara from 1956; $1,500 at Horne.
Above: Muji’s Large Double Light Ash Bed with storage drawers reminds us of the storage bed frame in the suite; $490.
Above: The PGH Luggage Rest was designed by Pittsburgh woodworking studio Bones & All. The luggage rest serves a different purpose depending on its orientation; on its side, a stool, flipped over, a small shelf. It’s $350 at the Ace Hotel Shop.
Lighting
Above: The Union Four-Inch Pendant from Schoolhouse Electric hangs in the entryway to the suite in an Antique Black finish and an OP-2280-10-4 Shade; $139.
Above: A reliable favorite, Schoolhouse Electric’s Large Alabax Light is $139.
Above: From Original BTC, the Ginger Floor Lamp, shown here in black, is $929 at Horne.
Above: Industrial Light Electric designed the PGH Cage Light custom for the Ace’s Pittsburgh guest rooms. It’s $115 at the Ace Hotel shop and through Industrial Light Electric.
