A modern solution for small spaces dates back to 1966 when German designer Rolf Heide created his stackable daybed. The simple wooden bed frames pile neatly on top of one another, like a great stacking chair, at the ready for extra guests. Available in single, double, and children’s size beds, the Stapelliege, manufactured by Müller Möbel, is our latest favorite discovery for versatile or urban living.

The bed’s Rollable Slatted Bases are sold separately for €85 to €124 ($97 to $141) and the RG-40 Mattress is around €312 ($355), depending on specifications, both from Müller Möbelwerkstätten. A single Stacking Bed inclusive of the base and mattress is £904 ($1,027) at the Home Online in the UK.
