Here at Remodelista, we approach design (including our own homes) with William Morris’s edict in mind: “Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.” These days we might tack on an addendum: “and comfortable, eco-minded, and multifunctional, too.”
Which is why we’re longtime appreciators of furniture makers Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, who prioritize sustainability, American craftsmanship, and creating spaces of health and comfort with every piece, and whose “artisans of comfort” hand-make their upholstery at their factory in Taylorsville, North Carolina. So when MG+BW emailed us with a design idea—to style a room with finds from their fall collection and a Remodelista sensibility—we were all in. A living room felt particularly fitting as many of us spend more time inside and our living spaces become relaxation zones, workspaces, and places for gathering, all in one.
The perfect spot to do it? Longtime editor Justine’s newly remodeled home just outside of Boston, with tall windows, charming original mouldings—and an empty living area waiting to be styled. With the help of the MG+BW team (the company offers complimentary in-store and virtual styling consultations with their designers, so you can shop with ease and receive individualized design advice from home) and the fall 2020 collection in hand, Justine chose a few multifunctional furnishings for the space, then added a few of her own favorite pieces into the mix.
The result is a sophisticated and super-comfortable spot to gather, with high/low and antique/modern elements, sustainable materials, and natural hues—very Remodelista meets MG+BW. Take a look.
