On a trip to Maine last week, I stopped in at Swans Island Blankets in scenic Northport, located in a 1780s farmhouse. Founded in the early 1990s by John and Carolyn Grace, former Boston lawyers, Swans Island uses wool from local Corriedale sheep to create textiles by hand using time-honored methods and organic dyes. The finely crafted blankets and throws are full-on investment pieces; prices start at $395 for an organic merino wool throw.
