We’ve been delighted to discover that Shaker design traditions are alive and well—in Japan. First we came across the work of Nagano master artisan Masashi Ifuji, maker of some of today’s most prized Shaker boxes. More recently, we featured Tokyo housewares shop Orné de Feuilles and its Shaker-style cat beds and wastebaskets: see Found in Translation.
Now, the two have come out with similar receptacles for dispensing tissues in style.

Above: Ifuji is offering these handmade Tissue Box Cubes of American cherry and gray-stained Japanese maple as a February online store exclusive: he’s taking pre-orders now and warns he may reach a cutoff point. They come in two sizes designed to conceal cube-shaped boxes of tissue. Prices range from $114 to $154 depending on size and finish. Ifuji crafts his boxes the traditional way, by boiling the wood, shaping it, and allowing it to dry in a mold for two days. He chronicles the journey to his first oval box here.

Above: Orné de Feuilles’ Shaker Tissue Box is sourced from AXCIS, a Japanese design company that has them made by a workshop in Taiwan. Above: The Shaker Tissue Box also comes in natural and is designed to hold a stack of loose tissues. They’re ¥9,900 ($65) from Orné de Feuilles, and though currently sold out, they get restocked often and the shop works with an international shipping partner.
