Happiness in Ojai, CA: Rory’s Other Place

After a devastating nightmare of a fire at Rory’s Place in Ojai—one of our favorite restaurants to open in the last decade—the phoenix is rising from the ashes, with a projected opening date days away (see the reimagined dining room here). Says Rory of the December 2023 firestorm: “Meave went home at 4am saying she wanted to become a fireman. Those guys are impressive.”

In the interlude after the 2023 fire, sisters and owners Meave McAuliffe (chef) and Rory McAuliffe (design/wine mastermind) took over the space next door and opened Rory’s Other Place, a small cafe and provisions shop that’s just as California cool as the original.

“I designed the place with the help of Winston Morris and Ted Christensen of Dusk.Co, Rory says. “It was a true collaborative effort. Winston and Ted did all the custom woodworking and concrete stuff.”
