I know I’m not alone in admitting that I’m out of practice at hosting parties. I’m not necessarily a natural host so, for me, it’s like a language: I have to use it or I lose it. Whether you’re shopping for a rusty one or for an old pro, here are gifts sure to please a host at any level.
Above: French designer Sarah Espeute of Oeuvres Sensibles (“sensitive works”) makes hand-embroidered tablecloths that evoke various table settings. On the higher end of the pricing spectrum, as each linen and cotton piece is created by hand, there are sizes from the Chemin de Campagne, a table runner size, for €386, to the Déjeuner d’Été shown starting at €978. Espeute also makes embroidered napkins, Fourchette & Couteau Rouge, for €42 each and individual placemats, Assiette Bistrot Vert, for €105. For more on the linens, see our post Object of Desire: Hand-Embroidered Table Linens from Oeuvres Sensibles in Marseille. Above: An elegant offering, the Georg Jensen Sky Cocktail Sticks Set comes in the classic Georg Jensen polished stainless steel finish; $110 at MARCH. Above: Gohar World is a new tableware company founded by sisters Laila Gohar, a chef, and Nadia Gohar, a painter. Their collection of surrealist tableware goods includes Italian-made food candles. The Ricotta Candle is $34. Above: At Artilleriet in Sweden, hand-embroidered placemats and napkins are a reminder of favorite travel destinations and are presented in a font that evokes a classic Parisian cafe. The Cities Placemat and Napkin Set is available in Capri or St. Moritz; 750 SEK (about $70 USD). Above: Atelier Solarshop in Antwerp, Belgium sources a small, but rarefied collection of vintage homeware. Their Set of 6 Vintage Red Long Drink Glasses is €90. While only one set of 6 is available, they also offer a Set of 5. Above: Designed by Pierre Sindre for Orsjo Belysning, the Visir Table Lamp in Rough Brass is a dimmable, battery-operated lamp that looks as elegant on a dinner table as it does in the garden. Very versatile. At €433, it’s a gift for a friend that you really appreciate. Above: The Alessi Socrates Corkscrew, designed by Jasper Morrison has changed my wine opening game significantly. I struggled with a classic corkscrew for years because I liked the look of it—and didn’t want anything too large taking up the cutlery drawer. Then I bought the Socrates and it pops out the cork brilliantly. Plus the accordion design makes it compact when not in use. The corkscrew can be found for $72.56 on Amazon. Above: French Syrups from Labour & Wait are made from organic, natural ingredients. For elevating cocktails, desserts and more. And the bottle is chic too. Available as Ginger, Hazelnut, or Basil flavors; £15 each.
