Spotted on Frugal Farmhouse Design, low-cost painted wood floors installed in the second-floor loft of a rustic barn residence on Long Island.
Lori Guyer, owner of the shop White Flower Farmhouse (located on the North Fork of Long Island), provides step-by-step instructions on how to create rustic-looking white-painted floors for 45 cents a square foot. For more ideas, go to Frugal Farmhouse Design.
Above: Start with 4-by-8-foot sheets of .25-inch-thick plywood, cut into 8-foot-long boards.
Above: Lightly sand the boards and cover them with an oil-based primer. Next, roll on a coat of latex low-luster exterior deck paint. Install the boards in a random pattern on a clean subfloor and glue them down with Liquid Nails (spacing the boards an eighth of an inch apart using short sticks). When the boards are dry, coat them with a second coat of deck paint.
Above: For verisimilitude, pound in a few nails before painting the final coat.
