DeVol, one of our favorite UK kitchen purveyors, has made the leap Stateside: they’ve just opened an impressive showroom on Bond Street in downtown New York with a giant pink island front and center. Today, we’re taking a look at the workshop’s Porcelain Pendants, part of its ever-expanding lineup of standalone offerings, which also includes furniture, hardware, and plumbing fixtures.
The collection has four basic designs—a fluted Pleat, rounded Beaker, dome-shaped Rice Bowl, and shallow Skullcap—in a variety of sizes and surface finishes that total 14 offerings in all. Each light is handmade by Kat Major, deVol’s resident ceramicist, at the company’s Leicestershire workshop, using pure, unglazed white porcelain that has a crisp look by day and glows from the inside by night. Let’s have a closer look at the offerings.

Each pendant light comes with a lamp holder in an antiqued brass finish and more than seven feet of twisted off-white fabric cable. (Matching brass ceiling roses are available for £25.) Every pendant is also paired with a complementary bulb (some are rounder, others more oblong in shape). Three of the four shapes are available in a traditional “chattered” surface finish. Ceramicist Kat Major explains the technique: She spins the pottery wheel quickly while gently pressing a metal tool against the surface. “The speed of the wheel against the sharp edge of the metal causes the tool to bounce in a rhythmic way, leaving the decorative marks behind.” Because it’s fired without a glaze, the porcelain has a matte, chalky finish.
