I recently discovered Future Maps, a series of high-quality, graphically sophisticated maps in vivid colors such as red, pink, lime, and gold from designer Marcus Kirby. The maps are printed on silk-finished paper and are created using “cylindrical equal area projection,” which means the countries are represented in their correct proportional size. You can buy them online from Future Maps; also, Design Within Reach recently began carrying a selection, including the Large Paper Future Map for $180 and the Small Paper Future Map for $80.
Above: The Huge Future Map in emerald, lime, and metallic khaki. At 2 by 1 meters (6.5 feet by 3 feet 3 inches), this is the biggest single sheet size available in the world, according to the company. Prices start at £75 for an unframed map.
Above: The Future Map in yellow, red, and purple; £27.50 for a 1015 by 575 mm (40 inches by 22.6 inches) paper map. Below: A detail shot.
