On a recent trip to Droog in Amsterdam, I admired (and coveted) the Flax Five Light designed by Christien Meindertsma for Thomas Eyck. Drawing on the traditions of the Dutch sixteenth-century cordage industry, Meindertsma works with flax, which is then twisted into strands and incorporated into products—such as rope lighting. For a similar look, Toronto-based Atelier 688 offers the Atelier 688 Manila Rope Light. See below for sources.
Above: Designed by Christien Meindertsma, the Flax Five Light is available in the US through Merchant No. 4 for $1,350 (shown above as part of the Flax Project exhibit at the Salone del Mobile in Milan).
Above three photos: The Atelier 688 Manila Rope Light is $350 per 12-foot section at Atelier 688 in Toronto. Made from 12-foot sections of manila rope, the lights are $350 each.
