This week we’re revising our all-time favorite summer stories, like this one:
When I first came across the work of Chiarastella Cattana, it was a pastel tartan tablecloth that I was certain was vintage. Turns out, the design was inspired by an old linen cloth from the 1950s, woven in a fine cotton-linen blend. Working out of a studio-boutique located in a former 17th century congregation—the Scuola dei Mureri near the Palazzo Grassi in Venice, Italy—Cattana revisits “patterns and structures, leading old weaving traditions toward new directions,” she explains.
Here’s a look at some of our favorite pieces, available through Chiarastella Cattana directly as well as shops such as Makie, March, Tiina the Store, and Salter House.

After a career working in fashion in Milan, Cattana returned to Venice to focus on textiles, mixing threads of Italian linen, cotton, Merino wool, cashmere, and silk. Partnering with small artisans from northern to southern Italy, all Chiarastella Cattana pieces are primarily woven at the mills of Alto Adige in South Tyrol.

Cattana produces everything from table lines, tea towels, bath towels, cushions, blankets, and rugs as well as fabric yardage for curtains, upholstery, and wall coverings.
