Our first 2017 installment in our High/Low department; the Kafe table lamp from Urban Outfitters, obviously inspired by an English classic, the Original BTC Hector lamp. Here’s a comparison.
Above: The 17-inch-tall Kafe Table Lamp has a powder-coated metal shade and is available in ivory (shown) or blue (as is the Original BTC version); it costs $49 from Urban Outfitters. The downside? The metal (not porcelain) shade has two rows of inelegant perforated cutouts and the lamp lacks the solidity of the original. It’s also “imported,” although UO doesn’t specify the country where it’s made.
Above: Designed by Original BTC founder Peter Bowles and made in Stoke-on-Trent, England, the 22-inch-high bone china Hector Medium Dome Table Lamp is $359 from YLighting and comes with a braided cotton cord. The shade is made of hand-finished slipcast translucent bone china, as is the base; the stem is satin-chromed brass.
