Our friend Regina Connell of Handful of Salt clued us in to Fyrn, a new line of high-end flat-pack furniture that launched late last year.
Founded by specialty woodworker Ros Broughton, whose family has been making furniture for more than a century, Fyrn’s first collection is Stemn, a line of six stools and chairs named for their svelte metal joints. Fyrn wares are available online, and the company plans to expand to offer furniture for every room in the house.
NB: Although the company does not have a showroom, if you’re in the SF Bay Area you can stop by to see the wares in person or pick up your furniture so you don’t have to pay to ship fully assembled furniture. To see the chairs in situ, visit SF restaurants Bellota (by Remodelista Architect/Designer Directory member Sagan Piechota) and the Tradesman, and Shakewell in Oakland.
Above: Broughton’s idea was to design furniture that would be shipped flat—to keep prices down—and painlessly assembled at home. But the company soon learned that not everyone wants to assemble their own furniture—so each piece has two prices: one for a flat-packed unit you assemble yourself and another for a fully assembled piece delivered to you at home.
Above: Rather than hide the connecting hardware, Fyrn embraced it: Its Stemn brackets are durable, replaceable, and available in several finishes. Shown here, L to R: the Mariposa Chair in oxidized oak with matte silver brackets ($495 for home assembly, $725 fully assembled), the same chair in blonde oak with matte silver brackets, and the Stanyan Bar Stool in blonde oak with custom white leather seats and black brackets ($615 for home assembly, $845 fully assembled, plus more for custom upholstery).
Above, L to R: the Mariposa Chair in charcoal black with black brackets, the Linden Counter Stool in oxidized oak with custom red leather seats and matte silver brackets ($565 for home assembly, $795 fully assembled, plus more for custom upholstery), and the Linden in blonde oak with custom black leather seats and black brackets.
Above L: Broughton assembles a chair. Above R: Oak wood chair legs in the shop, finished in charcoal black. Though durability is one of Fyrn’s highest priorities, if something does break, the company will work with you to provide a replacement piece.
Above L: The Mariposa Chair in oxidized oak with specialty copper bronze brackets (an extra $50 per chair). Above R: A pair of Mariposa chairs with custom leather seats; Fyrn offers custom upholstery in both regular and vegan leathers.
Above, top: Fyrn’s four bracket finishes: black, graphite, copper bronze, and matte silver. Above, bottom: American hardwood finishes include charcoal black, oxidized oak, and blonde oak. Each piece comes with comprehensive assembly instructions, and online assembly videos are coming soon.
