The team behind New York-based sleep startup Casper founded their company on a simple premise: the mattress industry needs an overhaul. Most showrooms offer a baffling array of choices at wildly different price points. “Mattress retailers play a game with eight gradients of firmness, for example; that’s how they guide you through the showroom toward something more expensive,” according to Casper CEO Philip Krim.
So like any good startup, Casper did its research—and learned that most people prefer a “medium-firm” mix of softness and support. Casper engineers—graduates of NASA and IDEO—found the solution in a top layer of springy latex foam, a breathable material to keep you cool at night, over a body-supporting layer of firm memory foam.
Thus, Casper was born: Available in six sizes, the mattresses start at $500 for a twin and go up to $950 for a California king. Shipping is free, and the mattress arrives in a compact box that’s easy to handle. Plus, there’s a 100-day trial period; if you don’t like the mattress, you can return it for a full refund. Above: In its research phase, Casper determined that most people want a supportive mattress surface; one not so soft that they sink in. Casper designed its mattress accordingly: The base is 6.5 inches of dense, durable foam, followed by a 1.5-inch layer of responsive memory foam to provide the support critical to a restorative night’s sleep. The third and topmost layer is made of hypoallergenic latex foam to promote ventilation and keep you cool at night.
Above: Casper prioritized four major factors that contribute to the quality of any mattress: comfort, support, temperature, and durability.
Above: The Casper mattress comes zipped in a removable, washable cover. The entire Casper mattress is made in the US of American materials, with the exception of the gray mattress cover trim, which is from Belgium.
Above: A recent mattress guide by Consumer Reports gave the Casper mattress a “very good” rating across all four dimensions tested: side sleeping, back sleeping, durability, and stability, noting that few mattresses score equally well for back and side sleepers.
Above: Casper ships free via UPS to the US and Canada. In San Francisco, Los Angeles, or New York, Casper will deliver your mattress for free by courier. If you’re not satisfied with your Casper mattress during your 100-night trial period, the company will donate the mattress to charity and give you a full refund.
Above: The Casper mattress works on any platform bed, but if you like your box spring, keep it; Casper can be paired with any boxspring or slatted base as long as slats are no more than three inches apart.
