Dyed-to-Order Bedding from Flaneur

February 24, 2017

In my family, we’re (in)famous for customizing—from designing our own wedding dresses to mixing our own paint colors. Yesterday, quite literally, as I was sitting down to write this post, my aunt called me: “Help, I need indigo sheets, but I can’t find the right shade.” So of course I told her about Flaneur, a company that specializes in the full spectrum of colored sheets and offers dyed-to-order bedding as well.

Somewhat ironically, Flaneur started in an empty bedroom. Flaneur founders Lu Xiong and Tianjiao Yu, both PhD candidates in literature at Columbia University at the time, were waiting for takeout in Lu’s newly assigned bedroom, when the two struck up a conversation about their mutual love of design. Throughout their studies, as they lounged around the bedroom reading, studying, writing, or playing the ukulele, Lu and TJ quickly realized how, more than any other room, the bedroom is the most personal space. “It’s a place where you can let your hair down and really be yourself,” they say. “It should reflect who you are.” Thus inspired, the pair founded Flaneur, named for the French word meaning “dreamers, idlers, and strollers of cities,” with the intention of offering fully customizable bedding.
