This just in from Tricia Rose of Rough Linen in Marin County, CA: "It all started five months ago. I wanted a strong, smooth double-width linen for sheeting, so I began talking to mills and getting samples. I spent a lot of time seeing what was out there: some was downright flimsy, some not cut on the square or with large stitching which offended me, and the only fabrics that had the body and quality I wanted were prohibitively expensive. I realized I simply had to get the linen made to my own specification, and after months of waiting, the first rolls of fabric arrived this week." To see the line, which includes duvet covers, bed skirts, pillow shams, and sheets, go to Rough Linen.
Above: "I am making these sheets the old way: flat, and large enough to tuck around a mattress," Rose says. "Modern fitted sheets and short flat top sheets may seem like a convenience, but the impetus behind them was to save on fabric, a gain for the manufacturer." Prices start at $125 for a handmade Pure White Linen Sheet, available directly from Rough Linen.
