One of our favorite design hacks is painting furniture. It’s quick (you can do it in an afternoon), budget-friendly, and leaves room for creativity. We like to go high/low with it; pair cheap furniture with luxe paint, change the knobs, and paint the screws to match.
Ikea offers a few unfinished furniture pieces that make painting even easier. (No varnish to strip! To cover up the pine knots, pair paint with a primer and top it with two coats.) Here’s a roundup of our favorites—many of which we have in our own homes.
Above: Ikea’s Rast Nightstand is perennially on sale; $14.99. Above: The Fjellse Bed is one of three beds in untreated wood at Ikea. It’s $99.99. Also see the Gjöra in untreated birch and the Tarva in pine Above: I’ve had the same Ingo Table for five years and it’s seen a few different paint colors in its lifetime; $69. Above: TheIvar Chair in untreated pine is incredibly affordable, $25, but its screws need to be retightened every few months, I’ve found. The full Ivar Dining Set comes with the table and four chairs; $169 at Ikea. Above: The Tarva 5-Drawer Chest in pine is one style we hacked with Farrow & Ball paint. We opted out of drawer pulls and spackled the existing holes before painting each of its parts. The dresser is $129 at Ikea and there are many other iterations of Tarva drawers too. Above: The modular Hejne Shelving Unit, shown here in two sections, is made of untreated solid pine (“or spruce,” as the site says); $70.97 for the two-section size. See all the Hejne units for more. Above: The Knagglig Box is $9.99 for the large size. Above: The Moppe Mini Storage Chest is made in untreated birch; $16.99. Above: The Ivar Cabinet mounts to the wall and can be painted in an alternating color or for a monochrome look, the same color as the wall; $70. More for Ikea enthusiasts:
