Box Hotel in Hakone, Japan: A New Boutique Lodge with Views of Lake Ashi

February 7, 2018

Overlooking Lake Ashiniko (known as Lake Ashi for short) in the Hakone area of Kanagawa Prefecture in Honshu, Japan, Box Hotel opened in the summer of 2017, offering five guest suites outfitted with vintage furniture, fully equipped kitchens, and turntables in some rooms. Owner Shihomi Sakai Borillo was born and raised in Tokyo and attended college in San Diego, where she is a partner in Azuki Sushi.

“During the restaurant’s construction,” she says, “I developed a passion for interior design and went back to college to pursue a second career as an interior designer. Last April, when my best friend and soulmate from Japan, Sayaka Doi, called about a hotel opportunity in Hakone, I said yes in a heartbeat.” Shihomi and Sayaka collaborated on the renovation and pulled it together in a matter of months.
