If you’re not a paid subscriber to Remodelista and Gardenista, you’re in for a treat this month. Every Sunday until the end of the year, we’re opening up Quick Takes content—normally reserved for subscribers—to everyone with four best-of roundups from our first year of Quick Takes.
(You can learn more about Quick Takes here. And sign up for a paid subscription by clicking “Join” in the upper right corner of this page.)
Today, we’re gathering the responses to the somewhat controversial question: Which sheets are the best sheets? Over the year, the responses ranged from poetic to practical; budget to luxe, spicy to highly specific—but everyone had an opinion. Without further ado, here are the best sheets, vetted and slept in by the experts.
(For last week’s roundup, see Quick Takes Special Edition: The Best Gifts to Bring to a Party, According to Our Experts.)
For the Linen-or-Bust Sleeper
No surprise: “linen” was the most frequent response from our experts. (From designer Heidi Lachapelle: “100 percent linen. Perhaps controversial, but I am all in.” From shop owner Katie Bowes: “My mom got me into linen sheets a long time ago, and now I cannot imagine sleeping on anything else. I love how cozy they are in winter and breathable in summer.” From designer Cassandra Ellis: “Rough, indestructible linen.” And from architect Spencer Fung: “Vintage linen.” You get the idea.)

For the Luxe Sleeper
- I love Cologne & Cotton. I used to wander around the shop after school for so many years, and I love their embroidered sheets. – shop owner Sandeep Salter of Salter House
- From Layla on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn. Alayne Patrick, the shop’s owner, has one of the best eyes in the world, and she is a fabulous designer. I love to mix and match her patterns with abandon instead of dressing my bed in one matching set. – event designer David Stark
- Frette, percale. – designers Michael Breland and Peter Harper of Breland Harper
For the More-Crisp-the-Better Sleeper
- Crispy cotton ones. — designer (and bedroom expert) Pernille Lind
- Good old fashioned L.L.Bean cotton percale sheets. They feel so crisp and luxe and the price is right. – Grier Stockman of Block Shop
- The Company Store’s white percale sheets. – Michelle Ficker and Peter Dolkas of Studio Dorion
- L.L.Bean Pima Percale 280 Thread Count. They’re incredibly soft workhorses. Colors are limited, but they’re a joy to sleep on. – stylists Porter and Hollister Hovey
For the Chilly Sleeper
For the Poetic Sleeper
- The sheets in any bed in any holiday destination anywhere in the world are always the best. We are not particular about counting threads or asking if the cotton is Egyptian or Turkish. Far away and clean is good enough. – Pablo Lopez and Iñigo Aragón
- The worn ones, sun-dried on a washing line. – chef and writer Clare de Boer
