Favorite recent thank-you gift? A simple but glamorous black scouring sponge from Australia, sent to me by domestic doyenne Tricia Rose of Rough Linen.
The sponge is from Barkly Basics, an Australian company founded by Natasha Malkov, a former molecular biologist who is “on a quest to make sponges stylish.” She founded her company after realizing she couldn’t find an attractive sponge. “Imagine this,” she writes. “You have just built a gorgeous new home. As you’re showing off your fabulous new kitchen to family and friends you spot your disturbingly bright green eyesore of a sponge sitting on the sink that you forgot to stash away. A sense of horror sets in. ‘How could have I forgotten to hide that ugly sponge and that hideous detergent bottle?’ Lucky for you and everyone else out there, Barkly Basics have designed a range of kitchen sponges that you will be proud to display in your fab kitchen.”
N.B. The line is now available in the US from Anthropologie.
Here’s a look.
