Where did Claire Danes pause to catch her breath before presenting at this year’s Emmy Awards? In a sanctuary of soft silver, vintage Danish furniture, and modern accents, courtesy of Derek Lam and Neal Beckstedt.
The Green Room at the 64th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards was a collaboration between fashion designer Derek Lam and his go-to architect and interior designer Neal Beckstedt. Faced with the challenge of transforming an empty, industrial backstage space into a comfortable setting for the talent to prep and mingle, the two designers worked quickly in choosing the palette and furniture. “We pulled this together in about four weeks,” says Beckstedt. “It was very fast paced. You really have to make quick decisions and go with your gut working with a tight deadline.”
Armed with a shared vision (the two designers have previously collaborated on Lam’s Soho loft and Fire Island summer home), the duo sourced vintage pieces from J .F. Chen in Los Angeles and draped the room in silvery curtains to give the lounge a low-key, glamorous vibe.

Above: Reflecting on his main goal for the project, Beckstedt says he aimed to create a "comfortable, private, cozy space" that encouraged conversation in different areas. Ample seating was key; a vintage Vladimir Kagan taupe mohair sofa with walnut burl base is complemented by a wood and leather chaise lounge by T.H. Robsj.
Above: The ebonized herringbone bamboo floor and floating white ceiling plane create a bold platform for the vintage furnishings. This mix gives the room "a casual yet refined feel," say Beckstedt. The soft metallic silver drapery goes back to Lam's color scheme, he says. "we wanted something calm and serene." The black velvet sculptural rosewood sofa allows for more seating: a vintage four-panel screen finished in parchment and resin by Karl Springer adds context in the far left.
