Shopper’s Diary: 7 Design-Forward Finds from A.S.L. in Paris

August 8, 2024

We’re always coveting the offerings from A.S.L. Paris—and no surprise: It’s the housewares project of French design/architect firm-of-the-moment Saint-Lazare. Here’s a look at just a handful of objects we have our eye on:

among the lighting offerings: the petite, pleated bookshelf lamp (€\240) 17
Above: Among the lighting offerings: the petite, pleated Bookshelf Lamp (€240), shown here with an Olive ceramic base and Mustard cotton lampshade.
Above: In their Gallery, A.S.L. offers a variety of vintage prints and posters. We particularly like their own designs, with charming illustrated reproductions atop one-of-a-kind vintage papers, like Jardin du Luxembourg (from the Places of Paris series, printed on an old edition of 1880 “Les anciens plans de Paris”) and The Fish (from the Bestiary series, drawn for the Les Sources de Cheverny hotel in the Loire Valley).

A French note from A.S.L.: “Our framer is closed in August. We will prepare your orders as soon as it reopens on 08/26.”

Above: A limited edition version of the outfit’s La Lampe Coupole, entirely hand-assembled in Paris with a solid oak base, cotton shade, and floral bias from a Paris haberdashery. (About the assembly process: “The fabric is wrapped around the frame, then tightened at the top and bottom with a string. Each piece is unique and may vary. That’s the beauty of the handwork we love so much.”)
Above: The Box (€145) “is inspired by the wooden crates used on movie sets,” according to A.S.L. “In our ateliers we use them as stools or footboards. At home, whether or not stacked, they can serve equally as coffee or side tables” (or as a useful step stool).

and among the versatile furniture offerings is the atelier&#8\2\17;s table 25
Above: And among the versatile furniture offerings is The Atelier’s Table (€2,900); it can serve as a “large workbench, working desk, or dining table” and has oak trestles and an okoumé wood top.

To browse the full selection, head to A.S.L. Paris. Today we’re also taking a look at the Paris flat of a Saint-Lazare/A.S.L. co-founder; see Kitchen of the Week: “Making Things Beautiful” in a Montmartre Flat.

And for more French finds we love, might we suggest:
