A Kismet Renovation in Highbury, London, by O’Sullivan Skoufoglou Architects

May 7, 2018

Andrea and Pete Love were looking to remodel the garden level of their traditional Victorian terraced house in Highbury, London, to create a more open and welcoming gathering space for their family of four. One afternoon, while picking up their children at school, they met fellow parents Jody O’Sullivan and Amalia Skoufoglou, two architects and partners of O’Sullivan Skoufoglou Architects. They immediately hit it off, and the conversation paved the way for the remodel.

The architects, O’Sullivan explains, “reimagined the under-celebrated enclosed courtyard and cluster of small rooms as and open-living area with uninterrupted access to the garden via a single sliding door that opens to a sunken patio.” The ground floor now serves as the family’s communal space with a custom kitchen, sapele wood dining alcove, and polished concrete floors. Andrea and Pete couldn’t be more pleased.

The window and sliding door frame is made from sapele, a mahogany wood native to Africa. The floors are 150mm-thick (about six inches) polished concrete in Henley Buff by The Concrete Flooring Contractors laid over a radiant heating system. The ceiling lights are Black Tube Spotlights from Mr. Resistor.
