We’ve long admired The Citizenry, an online marketplace for fair trade, small-batch wares made by artists the world over. The brand launched in 2014 with handmade goods from Peru, Argentina, and Uganda, and has added collections from five more countries over time.
Intrigued by the brand’s latest country addition—Mali—we took a moment to browse The Citizenry’s offerings from the African continent, from makers in Morocco, Mali, and Uganda. Here are some of our favorites.
Above: The Talari Indigo Lumbar Pillow is made of 100 percent cotton, hand-dyed with indigo in a fair-trade cooperative in Mali. It’s finished with a rose gold zipper and the pillow insert is included; $100. The Citizenry publishes maker stories, which are quite compelling; visit their Artisan Partners page for more. Above: The Minuit Mud Cloth Lumbar Pillow sports a hand-painted pattern of arrows, dots, and dashes with solid black on reverse. It’s made of cotton and painted in Mali with fermented mud from the Niger River; $155. Above: The Demi Mud Cloth Pillow, shown here in black, is also painted by hand in Mali and has the pattern on both sides. It’s also available in a reverse colorway of black on cream; $125. Above: These Echelle Mud Cloth Napkins from Mali come in a set of six: two napkins in three different patterns, held together with a leather tie; $75. Above: Made by hand in Morocco, the Riad Leather Floor Pillow is available with either minimal corner seams or hand-stitched leather detailing; one of each is shown above. Made in a fair-trade workshop in Marrakech of cognac-colored Moroccan leather, each pillow is $350. Above: Sahar TowelsSahar striped bath towels 149 are also made by hand in Morocco, this time woven from 100 percent Egyptian cotton. The ivory-and-black striped towels are $30 for a hand towel and $55 for a bath towel. Above: The Adila Cactus Silk Runner is made in Morocco of sabra, a vegan silk alternative derived from cactus. The rug is 8 by 2 1/4 feet and has a black base with cream detailing; $375. Above: The Nzuri Basket would make a generous catchall by the front door. It’s handmade by a women’s collective in the Rwenzori Mountains of Uganda, and the pointed lid is a traditional Ugandan design. The black-and-tan basket is $155.
