For 15+ years we have stayed true to three key elements of our company: creating great places, improving the community, and having fun. We are passionate about collaboration and work hard to find the best solution for the client, the site and the building to meet these goals. Most importantly we believe in building things right the first time.

Honored to be named Portland’s Main Street Architect, we enjoy putting our expertise in historic renovation to work in homes, restaurants, wineries, corporate headquarters, office spaces, and building makeovers. We value sustainability and see adaptive reuse of buildings as recycling on the largest scale. Principals, Melody Emerick and Brian Emerick, AIA lead a vibrant, talented, and well-traveled staff, maintaining personal and hands-on involvement with each and every project.

Division St. Residence

This unique home is the poster child of adaptive reuse.  Starting with a building that intermingled three structures from different periods over the last century, we crafted a strategy to reuse the structure, adding a penthouse and a roof garden creating an urban oasis and a highly energy-efficient home. Marrying practicality with craftsmanship, almost everything for this project was handmade locally from raw materials by Portland artisans.

Northwood Residence

This home is the first LEED-certified stand-alone residence in Portland and was among the first in the nation to meet Gold status. Situated 750’ above the west bank of the Willamette River and only minutes from downtown Portland, the property is embedded in 300 protected acres of Terwilliger Parkway. The home creates opportunities for indoor / outdoor living in the mild climate and forges strong connections to the surrounding forest.

Old Salty

What looked to be a scraper, this cabin in Seaside, OR was ripe for rescue-with rooms enveloped in bead board, a large wraparound porch and light coming in on all sides.  What it lacked was coziness, structural stability, and important basics like heating and operable windows.  All of that changed with a whole house remodel.  Vintage and second-hand design details add an authentic patina to the house.

Vitner's Residence

Situated on an awesome piece of vineyard land, this poorly built, 80’s split level house was renovated to create a home comfortable enough for these down to earth vintners and their four kids, but elegant enough to host wine events and industry giants. The design was an overhaul of the split level home to create a kids’/guests’ retreat and a new addition that lives by its indoor/outdoor mantra.

Midcentury Residence

The beauty in this expansive Walter Gordon, mid-century home was that it had been untouched since it was built. The challenge was remodeling the heart of it – the kitchen, family room, mudroom, dining area – so that it was functional and beautiful for a family of five. The results were exacting details and subtle changes to create a home that felt refreshed, airy, and warm.

Mediterranean Residence

This old, elegant Mediterranean home lost its vision through some poorly executed remodeling efforts.  With new owners and a new clarity in the design, this top to bottom remodel shines with elegance and freshness throughout its rooms.

NE Bungalow

We started with a sweet little bungalow that had good bones, but needed light and connection from room to room.  We proposed moving the kitchen to a former bedroom and opened it up to the dining room and the whole house breathed easier. Upstairs, a similarly unique move was made- we took the little sun porch and enlarged it to make it the new master bedroom- and the best room in the house was created.

Historic Remodel

This beautiful historic Portland home was saddled with a kitchen that didn’t fit with the rest of the house.  New windows, raised ceilings and an open plan were key in transforming this kitchen from a dark, dead end space to the light and airy room it is now.  The exterior scope involved transforming a deteriorating patio into an outdoor dining space that also serves as the family’s main entry into the home.
