Perfectionists take note: One of the best ideas we've seen in a while is the Trufig system of flush-mounted cover plates. Based in Southern California, Trufig (which stands for Truly Flush Integration) recently won a CEDIA Manufacturers' Excellence Award for the line's "ability to take technology supplied by various manufacturers and provide a uniform industrial design, color, and mounting process resulting in a perfectly flush installation into a wall or ceiling." I absolutely love these. I saw them before and wanted to use them one day for one of my projects.. I love the clean unobstructed wall surface :)
They are very nice, but how on earth does one achieve that perfect rough opening, ie in sheetrock?
Heather, essentially what their providing is a mud ring for a standard Leviton outlet. The mud ring works like a standard drywall metal edge, only it's shaped and overlays the rough-cut sheetrock hole. It then gets mudded, sanded and painted, leaving you with the crisp opening.

For the average home owner doing 1 or 2 of these wouldnt be too bad but for a complete home.....have fun with that.
